My Favorite Things
Name: Kate Barrette
Title: Owner/designer. The Home Market, Milwaukee
As the former director of national retail sales for Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic, Kate Barrette, 29, has seen a lot of little luxuries. Now this Wisconsin native - who recently returned from Los Angeles - has her own retail haven in the Third Ward that specializes in outfitting the home. One a recent visit, the scent of ginger and fig filled the air from her apothecary selection and soothing music was the perfect backdrop to a room filled with remnants of the sea, cashmere blankets, vintage glassware, and comfy couches and chairs. "That's one thing I strove for with this store, to have hip pieces but also keep clean, classic lines," she says. "I like to merge different styles and different motifs, such as mixing a contemporary table and vases with an 8-foot French mirror," she says. "I want it to be a mix of things."
1. Sevilla white-denim slipcovered chaise, $2800. "It's the best thing to curl up in at night, by yourself or to share with someone else."
2. Body Glow 4-ounce fragrance spray, $28. "It's a really modern scent - it has a mix of gardenias and Tuber rose. It's fresh and clear, great for putting on in the morning before you go out."
3. Set of four zebra coasters, $48. "It's a great pop in your house - a fun thing that can liven up your room. And it can go with a wide range of different home-décor styles."
4. Bella Notte cashmere throw with silk charmeuse trim, $350. "It's the most amazing gift, and indulgent purchase."
5. White starfish, $2. "It's a staple, and it's great for on top of a gift, and you can put a lot into a glass jar. It reminds me of L.A. and the ocean."
